Immigration, JPJ op rounds up nearly 400 undocumented migrants in Putrajaya

PUTRAJAYA: A joint operation here saw 377 undocumented migrants detained early Thursday (Nov 16) morning.

"This operation started at 5am around Jalan Putrajaya and was carried out jointly with the Road Transport Department (JPJ)," Immigration Department director-general Datuk Ruslin Jusoh said in a statement.

"Over 110 Immigration officers and 40 JPJ officers of various ranks carried out the operation during which we checked 600 foreigners."

Ruslin said those detained were between the ages of 25 and 55, and were held for various offences.

"Of the total, 250 are women while 127 are men. They are from Bangladesh, Nepal, Myanmar, Indonesia, Pakistan, India and Sri Lanka.

"There were two inspection checkpoints on the main road entering Putrajaya from the direction of Kajang and Bangi," he said, adding that the operation was mounted following public complaints of undocumented migrants there.

He said among the offences were not having identity documents, overstaying, and other breaches of the Immigration Act 1959/63, the Passport Act 1966 and the Immigration Regulations 1963.

"The detainees will be brought to the Semenyih depot for further investigation and action.

"We wish to remind all employers not to employ undocumented migrants. Those who continue to do so will be subject to strict action under the Immigration Act 1959/63," he said.
